"Awesome replacement for plain, old desktop"

    April 8, 2009  |   By rallynochaos

Looks amazing, the downloadable themes online allow you to really customize the look of the room. Picture frame feature allows you to have slideshow of your own images or images taken from online by keyword. Free version has 90% of features.

    Graphics intensive
Grouped items can not be placed on a wall unless put into folder first

I have to say I'm impressed. This adds a lot of functionality to the desktop. The ability to group similar items really reduces the clutter of the desktop. To make the desktop more clean looking, I found you can put files and folders on the wall at the bottom of the screen. This way they can not be seen from the standard floor view but can be seen when you view that wall.

Decorating the walls and floors is really easy. You just put the images you want to use on your desktop and you can resize them and place them wherever you want. The Picture Frame feature is really cool. It allows you to create a slideshow that constantly circles at a set interval on your desktop. You can either set it to use pictures from your computer or to use a keyword to grab photos from online. I use this to view random pieces of art that I wouldn't usually see.

The themes that come with the program are pretty ugly but it allows you to download user created themes from online or to set the pictures for the floor and each wall yourself. Installing the themes is a bit tricky. You have to find the folder that Bumptop uses to store themes and place a folder with all the downloaded theme's files in there. Bumptop doesn't store the themes in the program files folder like you would expect (even though there is a themes folder inside the Bumptop folder in program files, it won't recognize themes in there interestingly enough). I found that i had to place new themes in the:
    c:\myname\AppData\Roaming\Bump Technologies, Inc\BumpTop\Temes

And I use Vista. I have no idea how I actually found that it stores them there, but it does so I hope that helps someone.

To those people who say it lags: I'm running a 2 year old HP laptop that I paid $999 for new. This definitely is not what you would call a "state of the art" laptop and it runs BumpTop fine. It lagged a little at first in the tutorial but BumpTop automatically adjusted its settings for my computer and now it runs great.

I've showed this to all my friends and they love it and many have downloaded it themselves.
