    "Nice Little Recording Tool"

    October 21, 2011  |   By neplusultraomni

You may need a tool like this if your sound card doesn't have a recording feature. Soundblaster took it out of its Windows 7 drivers, but sold the product as being Windows 7 compatable. I'll never buy anything from them ever again. Most recording software depends on the soundcard drivers being able to record, so you'll get silence if you try to use them. Freecorder has built in recording technology, so now I can use my PC to record sound without running a cable from line-out to microphone.

It's very simple to use. You can disable the toolbar if you don't need it all the time. It will automatically detect when a track begins and ends and put the file in a folder. Unlike streamripper, which copies the actual stream, freecorder records (resamples) the sound so there is a theoretical loss of sound quality from the original, so don't choose a bit rate too low.

The are only two significant cons. You can't record to WAV only up to 320 Kbps, which is very high quality. Second, there is no manual feature to begin and end recordings if for some reason you want one big file.

If Soundbastards or some other sound card maker crippled your computer, this product will give you back the ability to record sound. It's very simple, and it works.

I just installed freecorder 6, upgrading fron version 4. I use this program primarily to record audio since my soundcard (soundblaster) disabled the recording function in Windows 7. The audio recording function in version 6 is terrible. First, the interface of version 4 was much more intuitive. I see the waves and I know everything is working and the stop button is there when I'm done. I can live with the new interface, but what I can't live with is that they eliminated the ability to choose a bit rate for the recording. I try to match the recording bit rate to the source bit rate, and some sites stream at a higher rate than 128 kbps. I'm glad that the installer left version 4 on my PC alone. The only benefit I see to version 6 is the screen recorder function.

To avoid the the extra addons and search changes, decline these things during installation. The default installation includes these things.

Bottom line: Stick with the previous versions.
