Set it up last night and it works as it should. The program itself installs the daemon, which continues to run in the background and on startup. The program just configures password protection and the level of sharing (via iTunes, the web, or both). I configured my Airport Extreme base station to forward port 8100 to my computer's internal IP after I installed the daemon. I have ipanoma email my mobile phone with the external IP if and when it changes, and connect to that as follows:
iTunes loads up and plays the songs when I click on them in the browser. If they are protected AAC files, I am asked to authorize the computer first (which is normal).
