It's not new, every version I've ever used requires an admin password before you go mucking around with important system logs. And what's so difficult about remembering an admin password? You're being naive if you think passwords don't matter. The entire reason why OSX.x is more secure than Windows is because Unix was built from the ground up to be multiuser capable.

You place a password on your Mac... to preclude some "unauthorized" entry onto your machine... the kid sister or brother in law who is invited for Thanksgiving dinner sees your laptop and decides to "take a ride".... Placing a password on your machine doesn't interfere with any of your daily operations... it's just plain "SMART" !
