"Does exactly what it's supposed to do."

    May 15, 2010  |   By One-Eared Gundark

Cheap or free - depending on your requirements. Reasonably fast uploads. Versioning. Restores are quick. Set it and forget it. Easy to customize backup set with exclusion filters. You can create and hold your own encryption key.

Interface can be very slow at times, often causing me to think the program has crashed. Initial backup can take days...or longer. If you choose to create your own encrytpion key, and you lose it, your data cannot be restored.

I've been using the PC version of this service for over one year, and so far, it has run problem-free. I've never had to perform a full restore, but every time I've retreived files from IDrive (often just to make sure the backup is working properly), it has worked perfectly.
The intial backup can take a long time, but this is really due to ISP upload speeds. Subsequent incremental backups happen quickly. I run an incremental backup every night, and it only takes a few minutes.
IDrive in combination with a local backup strategy makes me feel very secure.
Since I've had no problems, I haven't had to deal with IDrive tech support, so I cannot rate that aspect of the service.

    Update to my review:
    IDrive saved my bacon.

My first real test of this service came yesterday when I had hard drive failure. I installed a new drive, Windows, etc. Got online and installed the IDrive software, and retrieved all my email that was backed up just a few hours before the crash.

The encryption and compresion works well. The restore operation told me I would be restoring over 200 MB of data. Because most of it was highly compressed, the data was downloaded in about one minute over my 1.5 Mb DSL connection. That was just my email (which is of highest importance to me), but I suspect the rest of my 3 GB of data will restore quickly as well, the exception being pictures and videos..

I do utilize local backups as well, but those only happen once a week on Mondays. So of course, so the drive crashes on Sunday. IDrive runs incremental backups every morning for me.

I am a very happy camper!
