"Over the hill; original developer moved on"

    September 17, 2012  |   By pjcamp

    Used to play everything flawlessly

    Doesn't anymore
    Nightmare to configure

KMPlayer was sold to Pandora TV, the original developer left, and it has languished in a nightmare land of shoddy updates that have broken a once fine player. I used to use it for everything. But there are perennial issues now. Most files have video and audio as much as 3 or 4 seconds out of sync and no amount of tweaking the settings will fix it. H.264 files generally play in slow motion as well as being out of sync. These files play fine using other players. The system load is horrible. I have a quad core machine and KMPlayer will run all four cores at high usage. I think the new owners have been more concerned with eye candy and less with playing media.

The original developer now has a product called PotPlayer which, even though still in late beta, beats the snot out of KMPlayer. It plays everything, correctly, and with light resource impact. Every dog has its day and KMPlayer's has come and gone. Sad.
