"Nice program marred by compatibility problems"

    March 22, 2010  |   By ceomrman

Its not Adobe Acrobat, a ridiculous piece of garbage software I will never install again. Foxit has a fast, clean interface, and doesn't muck up your computer when you install it. Its very good once if you can get it to work.

Foxit's Firefox patch is notoriously unreliable and this version is broken on both my Vista and Win7 boxes. Half the time, I get a strange error when trying to print from Foxit, for which the only solution seems to be a reboot.

Foxit is a nice program, when it decides to work. Even when its misbehaving, such as requiring a reboot to print, taking ages to print, or failing to integrate with Firefox, its STILL better than Adobe's product. Acrobat is just awful - its slow, HUGELY bloated, and used to cause endless crashes, inexplicable problems, and complications for me. Now, all that's gone, replaced by less-annoying hassle.
In the end though, Foxit really is not the ideal solution. The company is still trying desperately to link their free product to the paid one, but the fact of the matter is that PDF's are very simple. There is no real need for any additional features. It's just a program to display pictures of pages. Ideally, it should have text recognition and highlight-ability, cut and paste, and search functions. A decent printer driver is a must, and it would be nice to load up documents right in the browser instead of saving them and loading them separately. Tabbed documents are nice, but not required. Foxit achieves most of those goals most of the time.
