    "Reliable free firewall"

    June 13, 2011  |   By SatyrMage

Bi-directional firewall, simple to use, relatively bug free (depending on version).

Included toolbar isn't worth the effort - bypass when installing.

Occasionally (on past versions) ZA would go haywire, and I'd have to uninstall and fresh install (not keeping prior configurations).

I run a trinity of security software: ZoneAlarm Free, Avast Free, Ad-Aware Free, and have done so for years on my home playing around computers. Other than the occasional re-install (see Cons, above), ZA does well, works as advertised, and isn't too obnoxious (at least once you get past the initial "training" period.

When CheckPoint bought out ZoneAlarm, there was a period when versions were not consistently stable... but things have evened out now, for the most part.

Regarding the Toolbar (optional component during install): I've found this to be buggy and problematic -- it's utility is so limited as to be almost non-existent, at least as far as ZoneAlarm goes. This is just a blatant unrelated add-on with a link stuck in it for ZoneAlarm -- making it the "ZoneAlarm Toolbar". Heh.
