A professional, sharp design goes a long way with Trillian, the most polished of the multi-protocol chat clients. The basic version support five of the major protocols, but not Google Talk.

I don't really like Trillian. It used a lot of memory on my computer even now and even when I used it years ago. Also, I understand they are trying to make money but then I would never pay for a better IM client, I think they should all be free.. but I guess not. Not having the paid version just makes you feel like you're one of the suckers with less capabilities and it's true.

by havanotherslice May 18, 2008 9:44 PM PDT: I agree with JoyceNgo as far as feeling like a sucker with a messenger that doesn't do all you want it to do because it's not a paid version. It's a messenger, and not a game that cost money. There are alot of great free demos out there but a messenger that's a non paid- for version is not a demo, it's a messenger. I am still going to try it- I haven't tried it yet.; Like this


by tashfeen_m May 17, 2008 12:29 PM PDT: Now there's Facebook chat, and Gmail chat, so can't really see myself using Trillian. Used it some time ago, didn't like it. Besides, there's Meebo! In any case, once Social Thing gets going, it'll probably add something like Trillian, just like Facebook came up with chat, and that will be end of Trillian, etc.; Like this Reply to this comment


by firefoxluva95 May 17, 2008 12:33 PM PDT: First off, I'd consider it quite lucky that I was able to get into the Trillian Astra Alpha testing program. Anyway, the new Trillian does seem to be lighter on resources but the interface is a bit Vista-esque so XP users may not be happy with the default skin. One of the major changes is the new XMPP plugin that includes support with Jabber/Google Talk although it is still quite unclear if this will be packaged with the free version or not. Trillian also has a native Myspace plugin and Bonjour serverless IM plugin. Trillian also has a feature where you are able to sync your status with the song that is playing in WMP, Winamp, or Itunes. There may be other players that work as well. Unfortunately, Trillian does not package a Facebook IM plugin which is why I sometimes use Digsby instead. The other options for multiclient IM are Pidgin, Miranda, and Digsby. Digsby looks like it can really take on Trillian and I'd like to see the showdown once both exit their prerelease statuses.; Like this Reply to this comment
