Comments on: Featured Freeware: 7-Zip

You've heard of the browser wars, but the compression wars? There's more out there than WinZip and WinRAR. Check out 7-Zip, a utility that can compress files smaller than its competitors and is compatible with more formats.

i feel 7 zip is much slower than winrar. though good thing is its handling of tar, gz formats and it being open source, but i find winrar more suitable to my needs.

May be you haven't tried 7-Zip yet? 7-Zip takes longer to compress file BETTER, as Seth Rosenblatt said: "Over 40%". 7-Zip is now the strongest archiver, but best of all: It's free and lite...

The only complaint I have is that it doesn't support (unzip) .ace files. This is one great freeware program. I've been using it for about two years now.

I was looking for a program to download in order to extract files from .RAR. So I tried "uberdownloads.com/rar " (or .com/unrar.html) for 7-ZIP. During the download process I de-selected some other programs, eg Yahoo toolbar etc, and yet I was completely ignored ,and about 5 or 6 unwanted programs were installed on my computer!!! It took me 3 hours to uninstall everything and I thought that their practices were very "underhanded". I would not trust them or the coms that use them to "force" software on you.
