Comments on: UltraExplorer is nearly perfect

There are several good freeware file-browsing alternatives for Windows out there, but freeware UltraExplorer overhauls the file-browsing experience.

Looks like the program is comming along nicely. When it has the same usability and more features than PowerDesk, I'll definately make the switch. Until then, I'll stick with PowerDesk (even though it's a really old program that's in dire need of an update).

Since UE is my hobby project I guess I should respond :^)

"Two major flaws hold the program back: the file searching sucks"

It doesn't suck it is non existent ;^) in the version you have! Actually it is there just disabled so you can't find it. The rewrite solves the problems with what was there and UE will have built in search in version 2.0.

"UltraExplorer doesn't auto-replace Windows Explorer"

And will likely never will. I won't risk messing with the registry of someone elses computer.

Also now I understand why my bug report bin was full this morning, lots of new downloads.

There are a couple of known bugs that will be fixed in the next version:

1) The Win-E hook messes up using the E key in other programs.
2) There is an occasional crash with the report saying "IsClass" in the crash line. Fixed for next release.
3) There is a crash when changing themes and sometimes on startup if something other than the default theme is used.

I use Powerdesk also. On both Vista and XP. Anyone know if you can make Windows Explorer in Vista look exactly like Windows Explorer in XP ?

Thank You.

I've been looking for a Windows Explorer replacement for a while and I thought this would be my panacea. However, I haven't had the program running for more than 10 min at time before something I did caused it to crash. I find that attempting to access 'My Computer' in order to see my connected drives usually causes the crash issue. In any case, I cannot waste my time starting and restarting this program every time I choose a drive or folder, so I guess it's back to the samo-samo for now.

I would love to be able to use this program, but in the end, it seems like it's still buggy.

Cheers.

If you use MSN Messenger you may will have a problem in My Computer. Some machines do some don't and I have not had time to track it down.

I think this program has a lot of promise, but it's current incarnation is too buggy. It's crashed on me a few times, particularly when I browse networked drives. Or maybe it's the column mode view (that I like) that's causing the crashes. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the next version!

This program is very nice to use, it's not nearly perfect but already perfect.

I just reviewed this program, though not nearly as thoroughly as Seth has done here.

I do realize that this is a hobby for the developer, so I'm willing to stick it out. Does anyone have problems with Ultra Explorer hanging while minimized? I'm happily working, just zipping along. I click on the task bar to restore Ultra Explorer (Portable) and ... nothing.

I will be happy to see this bug (or issue) resolved.

Cheers,

Mitch
