Why not just add more toolbars to take your icons. I have 3 on my screen, top, bottom and right.
Instructions are here

And some screenshots of my desktop.

Yeah, what also works is on yahoo widgets ( widgets.yahoo.com ) there is a widget you can search for, its called My Quick Launcher, and it is very powerful, a great widget, and it is customizable, it works for me and you don't have to install anything but the latest version of yahoo widgets and that widget.

i love the dock idea, but it means that another app has to be running......the quick launch on the start menu can be drug out onto the desktop and customized (large icons mainly)...it doesn't offer all the frills, but at least it doesn't mean having another app running

A quick note...What a lot of people don't realize is you can do just about the exact same thing using a standard windows feature. All you have to do is create a toolbar of the windows desktop icons. After you have done that you can drag it to the desktop, place it where you want, resize it however you want, or you can dock it on any edge of your screen. You can also auto hide it and with just with a movement of the mouse over the edge of the screen have it reappear. Don't get me wrong, Rocketdock looks cooler and has more visual features, however if it's convenience you seek...why take up more space on your HD when you can do the same thing using what you already have?
