Working with XP
by jandav41 August 14, 2007 6:30 PM PDT
I have XP Professional SP2 on an IBM Net Vista, and plan to stay with XP for some time, as most reviews about Vista indicate that it is an 'over-priced, under-fed' offering and not worth it, until 'after the dust settles' and there are significant fixes. To maintain my PC, I use, via Earthlink. the 'PC Fine Tune' which has: 'Registry Fixer', 'Disk Fixer', optimization for Internet cache, history, and cookies, 'Registry Cleaner', 'Jet Defrag', and 'Startup Commander'. In addition, I use 'AVG 7.5 AntiVirus', and 'AVG Anti-Rootkit', coupled with 'PC Tools Firewall Plus'. For spyware I use 'XoftSpySE'. All of this seems to keep me going well. I have IE 7, prefer searches in Google, and just generally 'hum right along'....

Vista vs XP pro
by KENNYBAKER August 14, 2007 6:34 PM PDT
My buddy lost his older Dell HDRIVE & purchased a new DELL with Vista. Quicken 2006 did not install properly nor did the HP printer drivers etc...Dell spent a lotta time helping remove the 2 programs.
I advised him to purchase Quicken 2007 which did install.

I am using Quicken 2005 & do not want to upgrade to Vista based upon some experiences from friends & my local PC computer club.

VISTA IS FOR THE PITS!!!
by ocarlos1 August 14, 2007 6:56 PM PDT
My old computer with XP broke down and the new one had Vista preinstalled. Microsoft developers should have used condoms before they starting screwing around with a new operating system. Needed - a program that will roll back to XP>

Staying with XP Pro but also have Vista Home P
by jagworld August 14, 2007 7:05 PM PDT
I run XP Pro 95% of the time but I did buy Vista Home Premium (because I got a good deal on it while buying some HD parts) and installed it into a different HD.

I have way too many programs running in XP that doesn't have Vista drivers and some never will.

Bottom line, I'm not giving up on XP till MS forces me to.

Media problems
by Luiz ricardo August 14, 2007 8:09 PM PDT
Windows media has a lot of problems of compatibility with many Programs, games and antivirus.Althought its wonderful layout the problems related with compatibility doesn't payoff a change of OS.I'm gonna change to windows vista only with the released of Vista service pack 1 until there I'll still be living with XP Professional edition.

Windows vista is slow, expensive and incompatible
by jmintegraser August 14, 2007 8:22 PM PDT
Unless you have more than 1Gb free of RAM, W.Vista is slow. Aside from being expensive, many of the programs and hardware that worked in XP do not work on W.Vista, so if you want to change to W.Vista, you should consider in buying a super PC, then W.Vista gives you a comparable service as XP.
For me W.Vista is just appearance and little functionality. Consider to try Suse Linux, is free, is nice, functional, virus proof and you can continue using your old PC.

XP vs Vista
by sailordes2 August 14, 2007 8:31 PM PDT
Vista was not ready for release. Sure the sharpies with their nimble fingers and all the time in ther world played and found it ok. I had an XP os on my old machine, before that 98, no problems; sure there was a little trouble transitioning to XP but nothing like the step to Vista.
I must have had a very early copy of Vista it was so fouled up you had to ask permission of an administrator, who was me, to do any thing:load programs, or any other simple tasks
you did in XP. The resolution came about when I had to BUY
new Vista Discs from HP (I have a new Compac Presario, The discs are not supplied, as before)The Vista I had was a total shambles(six years in the making, I understand) not much for the effort. I liked XP. when you are forced to buy a new computer, as I was, you should be given a choice; buy the OS that you had, or the new one. That might be something for the next Gates to think about.

Amazing! I'm Not the only One Loving XP over Vista
by shylev August 14, 2007 8:37 PM PDT
When Vista was made totally public and they were giving out free trial outs, their scan of my computer said I had way to much on it to convert, even though it was only 35% full. So I gave up. Shortly after that I heard the Vista free upgrade trial was going back to Windows 98SE -or- 2000. To get the Real upgrade, you had to dough out $ 350.** then it went to only $ 250.** Now I just heard a friend went ahead for the upgrade for an Amazing price of $ 175.** Which I am still not convinced that it is even worth upgrading. Plus I still have not been given any very good reason to upgrade from XP which works Great for ALL my Purposes and Plus a whole lot more that am still learning.
Sincerely your XP satisfied Home user. :)

Oil for XP
by skopelman August 14, 2007 8:39 PM PDT
Xp is a very resiliant system if only a few things are maintained with regard to security; that is, a two-way firewall, a good anti-spyware utility, and a small footprint anti-virus app. For the firewall, I use "Personal firewall" by Sunbelt. I run "CounterSpy" anti-spyware, and the free "AVG" anti-virus utility. I have two XP boxes and a WIN2K Pro machine connected to a router through a broadband modem. I have never shut them off; they run 24/7, except for the monitors, which I shut off when not in use. One has been running for over seven years. In the last several years, as my proficiency has increased, I have only had one trojan and two viruses. There are multiple cookies that are detected daily. The WIN2K machine I have formatted twice in seven years. I attribute the majority of the reason for such success is because of good security. I have installed hundreds of applications, both in BETA and otherwise over the years, but with a good, third-party uninstaller, I keep my registry lean. I use Diskeeper to defrag my systems. I use Office 2003 and pay particular attention to email that I am not expecting. I use a good anti-spam filter and run a virus check on any attachments I choose to open. I am careful to go on legitimate websites by reviewing my firewall log. If they detect bad guys, I do not revisit those sites, but block them instead. Following this regimen, I have had a very smooth-sailing computer adventure.

Vista versus Others
by jsv4706 August 14, 2007 8:41 PM PDT
Hi all,
Have been a loyal MS user since 3.1 early days but am gradually switching to Mac/Linux. I'm fine using tweaked classical looking XP PCs but not overloaded slow cumbersome Vista. A new Core 2 Duo 2 GB RAM Vaio with Vista Home Premium and heaps of junkware was reformatted with XP Pro SP2 running so much faster and better for it. Ubuntu installed flawlessly on an older Acer laptop unable to run Vista at all. Switching to Mac/Linux challenges remain with with MS specialised software, drivers and peripherals but is certainly worth it. Linux and Mac for both work and fun
is where I am heading.

why spend hundreds to upgrade?
by ebethw85 August 14, 2007 8:42 PM PDT
Like almost everyone who owns a PC, I downloaded the Vista upgrade adviser that Microsoft has on its website to see what i would need to upgrade to Vista. My computer was about 1 1/2 years old and apparently I needed to spend about $500-$1000 to upgrade the RAM, the processor (intel pentium M), and the graphics card if I wanted to upgrade to Vista Home Premium. The only Vista I could run with my current hardware would be the Vista Home Basic, which is just XP only with a different looking task bar. Another reason why I'm a XP user still is that many of the applications still work perfectly fine with XP, especially the new Office 2007 which is awesome!

Just to add my answer/comments on this great set of questions ~
IrfanView [http://www.irfanview.com] was a great discovery to replace ULEAD!
'Alienware.com' has supplied me with the BEST THEME [Darkstar]of ANY I've seen through Vista or any other online source. It turned Windows XP into a whole nutter system!
'Yahoo!WidgetEngine' has supplied me with hundreds of excellent tools to enhance information & displays as well as 'JACK FM' entertainment! It's simply fantastic!
I like Qlocks world time zone help & ClocX [http://clocx.php5.cz/] is pretty handy & kewl too!
Naturally, CCleaner, LavasoftAdAware, Major Geeks, Tucows & Softpedia's TitlebarTime are but a few 'honorable mentions' to compliment c/net's Download.com
Thanks fer da fun info!

xp works just fine
by zeppo450 August 14, 2007 8:54 PM PDT
I'm a believer in the idea that if its working well, don't fix it. I've heard so many reports about vista incompatibilities and crashes. I'm not about to spend a dime to get a headache with Vista. I'll go so far as to but a new computer w/ no os so i can put xp on it. It works without taking resources I need elsewhere. Vista sounds like the new generation of windows ME. What a disaster that was!!!!!!

Windows XP v vista & the i Words
by Richard 71 August 14, 2007 8:56 PM PDT
To CNET, as a member the debate about XP & Vista is similar
to Win-98 & XP. Win-98 is what I learnt with until it became
obsolete. I've now upgraded to XP (SP2) & I'm still learning Computers. Now XP will be obsolete with a new system called Vista. Every upgrade with a Computer cost money. And there's the problem of learning all over again.
The same problem happened with XP as with Vista ie Win-98
was stable compared with the then new Win-XP, it wasn't
until XP SP2 came along that XP was the way to go. Also
my family didn't upgrade to XP until Microsoft & the Internet made it useless. As one of your report stated I'll
wait until Vist has afew sevice packs installed & everyone
starts using it. I don't like Vista picking on the Video card, the Card has enough to deal with, with todays Multimedia. I ran the Vista Upgrade Progam & my Computer is
Vista Ready except the Video Card & with 1GB of RAM is just
enough to run Vista & my Computer is only 1 year old!
One thing I would like to know is, why are all of the modern words today start with "i"? It is starting to
be anoiying.
Keep up with the good reports CNET Team.
Regards..Richard71.
