I was a helpless user of both McAfee and Norton for years and got so frustrated that I came to CNET to see if they had any suggestions for making my anti-virus woes better. AVG was ranked at the top and I took a chance, that was two years ago and I'm still an AVG user. I've gone to far as to recommend AVG to several friends and 3 prospective new PC buyers instead of the pre-installed anti-virus choices, all have had the same virus free results and drastically reduced system resources usage.

I would never hesitate to recommend this fantastic cornerstone of your computing security.

Very minimal explanation, but your missing the Ignore fault conditons in the advance settings, most if any changes that you will want to do are in the advance settings, a small example of this should be added. I use more then one anti-virus at a time on the same computer and have NO problems. One of them is AVG the other is Avira. Some people don't like it but I'm looking for results on freeware. Don't forget Free comes with some faults. Running 2 free anti-virus at a time, I have not run in to any virus problems. Other programs that are good are Avira and Avast. Note that they also miss some things they are FREE.

I USED to use AVG - until Version 8. I installed AVG8 on my laptop and it considered several of my files to be viruses. Strange, since I had not used PC in months and was fine last scan. The only variable was AVG8. I quarantined them and then saw that my Restore points were ruined. I restored the files - didn't help. I got my PC right again and I have been using AVAST since then with no issues.
Check Google - you'll fine a LOT of others who stopped using AVG after version 8 release.

I've used this for several years without a problem, BUT V8 ...

Expects everyone to be on line 24/365.
I'm not.

That appears to be a BIG problem.

I turn my computer on, and get the message that the update connection has failed.
DUH!!!

I go on line, click on the "!-ed" icon and get the message that all is up to snuff, but I need to re-start my computer, and the whole vicious circle starts again.

If I DON"T click on the button, when update time rolls around I get the message that the file could not be updated because it is corrupted.

Click on the button and now [img]http://www.enochutah.net/Comp/AVG-1.jpg[img]
find that the upload database has been turned off. Weird.

Rather than run in circles, I mostly ignore it anymore.

Come on people to compare AVG to Norton or McAfee is like comparing Windows to one of the Linux distro's. Both great for what they are but .... YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!!!. This is not to say that AVG is a bad product quite the opposite I have found AVG to work well and for my customers who are unwilling to pay for Norton or one the others, AVG is a much better alternative to no protection at all. With that said, do you really believe that a free program could be as good as one that you pay for??? Also to remember that when somone does a comparisson of products they are taking PRICE $$$ into consideration for the average consumer. For the average home who is not going to make financial transactions AVG is fine but, if data secuity is important, or for a home office you have got ask youreslf just one question, DO I FEEL LUCKY? As I have seen computers running AVG get infected. I have confimed this by scanning the suspect machine with Noron or McAfee and in some cases I have found problems that AVG did not catch. With that said In over 15 years of using Norton products at home and at the office, I have NEVER WITNESSED A COMPUTER THAT WAS RUNNING NORTON AND UP TO DATE BECOME INFECTED......... NEVER!!!!!!!!!

In summary AVG is a fine product but you do get what you pay for and it is FREE!!
