Lupe Fiasco, the Grammy-winning, platinum-selling rapper, releases his next record, "Tetsuo and Youth," in early 2014. Fans are getting a taste of the new material on the Tetsuo and Youth preview tour this month.
From the road, the rapper best known for spitting such hits as "Superstar," "The Show Goes On," "Out of My Head," and "Battle Scars" chatted about the new album, the apps he uses on the road, his new health and wellness app, and his top five faves.
While on tour, which apps do you use to stay in touch with your fans and your loved ones?
In terms of the new album, what does the title mean, and what can you tell us about the sound and subject matter and release date?
The title literally means nothing at all; it's just a title I pulled. The sound is a bit more raunchy and ratchet but with the infamous Lupe Fiasco twist. The release date is currently slated for early next year.
You've released a lot of mixtapes, and there's a mixtape on your current single artwork. Is there still a place for the mixtape in 2013?
What's the last song that you downloaded, and what did you think of it?
"Pirate Jenny," a song by Nina Simone, and I really like it a lot.
What motivated you to found your own health and wellness app, Higi? Did your father's diabetes factor into your decision?
Actually I was brought on board by Michael Ferro [chair of the "Chicago Sun-Times"] to be a part of Higi. The status and health of my father definitely helped in my decision to join on.
Is there a gaming app that you play when you're trying to kill time?
Yes, I play Go and Monsters Ate My Condo.
On the road, do you ever read books on an iPhone/iPad? What was the last book you read?
When I do read a book, it's typically a traditional paper book. The last book that I read was "Artist Philosophy" by Mark Rothko.
What are your top five apps and why?
Zabihah because it gives me all halal food restaurant locations as well as mosque locations. I and my crew/band use Master Tour to know our day-to-day schedule while on tour. I use Higi to track my healthiness; Voice Memo, which helps me take notes for when I go back in the studio; and Traktor when I DJ.
