Gems for Mac review

Play an enjoyable game that comes with a basic and friendly gameplay and nice visual and audio effects.

Gems for Mac employs the game mechanics found in the classic Bejeweled, where the player needs to make a row or a column consisting of at least three matching gems. This paid app comes with pleasing graphics and special effects, as well as nice sounds and music. If you like relaxing, undemanding games, this one is good for you.

When started, Gems for Mac gives you a quick tutorial on how to play the game, and then lets you get started without further ado. You can choose from among three difficulties and two special modes: a Relax mode, which makes the game easier, and a Wicked mode where you use the number pad on your keyboard to select gem combinations. On the top of the screen you'll find tabs for the game, settings, and leaderboards. Despite being rather basic, the app offers a fair degree of customization, letting you adjust sound and music levels, choose a background, and toggle the glow effect on gems. Overall, the game feels smooth and is thoroughly enjoyable.

If you miss the classic Bejeweled, you will certainly like Gems for Mac. Building on the classic game mechanics, it adds pleasant visuals and sounds and also supports fullscreen mode for complete immersion. What's more, the integrated global leaderboard will keep you interested in the game. After all, nobody likes to finish second...

Editors' note: This is a review of the trial version of Gems for Mac 7.1.
