NYTimes Crosswords review

Get access to daily puzzles and more with this well-designed app.

NYTimes Crosswords brings all the fun and challenge of crosswords from "The New York Times" to your mobile device. If you're a fan of these popular puzzles, this app is a great way to take them with you on the go.

We were a little worried about how the app would manage to cram the puzzle, itself, and all the clues into an interface that's navigable on an iPhone, but the innovative design handles the challenge quite well. It's easy to switch between Down and Across clues, and pencil mode lets you record letters you're not sure of in gray instead of black. Once you complete a puzzle you can submit it to verify your answers. NYTimes Crosswords comes with a week-long trial subscription that provides you with the daily puzzle each day, but you can purchase a one-year subscription, which includes access to the archives for $16.99, and seems like a great deal to us. Users can also purchase additional puzzle packs. The app lets users create an account to track their scores and compare them to other users. The app contains a thorough built-in Help file, but most users should be able to figure out the app's features without too much assistance. Overall, we were impressed with the design and features in NYTimes Crosswords, and it goes without saying that the puzzles, themselves, are top notch. We recommend this app to any crossword fan with an iOS device.
