Review: Grab free videos and MP3s with YouTube Downloader NG

Download YouTube vids and tunes with this fast and easy freeware.

YouTube Downloader NG can download videos and MP3s, one by one or in batches, to your system. It's easy to use and works fast, with basic settings that don't scrimp on quality. A Pro version is available, but most users will find the free YouTube Downloader NG more than enough for daily use.

YouTube Downloader NG's plain but colorful dialog-style interface can be changed with the help of hue and saturation sliders that appear when you press "Skin." The Main tab handles single downloads, while the Multithreads tab downloads files in batches. We could choose to download either Videos or MP3/Music files and select a specific file resolution, but the default choice, Best Available, worked well for us. We browsed to a destination folder (the default is your Videos folder) and then opened our Web browser and navigated to a YouTube video. We copied the video's URL, but when we returned to YouTube Downloader NG to paste it, we found it had been entered automatically -- nice; and handy for batches. We pressed "Download," and YouTube Downloader NG snagged our six-minute video in mere seconds. The downloaded file played fine.

While the quality of the videos and tunes posted on YouTube isn't always the highest, there's no arguing about the variety: If it's not on YouTube, it's probably because someone had it taken down. More (and less) sophisticated tools are out there, but YouTube Downloader NG proved itself to be a top-performing, no-nonsense freeware YouTube grabber that more than meets our needs.
