Review: The future of magazines is in your hands with Google Play Magazine

Buy, read, and save top-quality magazines on your Android device with this free Google app.

Google Play Magazines lets you buy and read the latest magazines right on your Android phone or tablet. This free app is a virtual magazine stand offering hundreds of titles, most costing from $0.99 cents to $5, though we saw a few for $20 or more as well as some freebies. You can subscribe to your favorite magazines just like you always have, only instead of piles of dog-eared paper to be binned and forgotten, you'll have a searchable library with perfect copies of every edition just a thumb-swipe away.

Google Play Magazines displayed some recommended magazines when we first opened it. After we'd added some titles, it showed our latest purchases in its main view. You can browse for magazines by thumbing through the merchandise, just like at the airport, though to read articles you have to download the edition. That's easy, thanks to the Play Store. High-resolution images and ample content make for substantial files that take time to download, though you can read what's ready under Read Now.

We downloaded one of the free magazines to test Play Magazine's features. Covers, pictures, and illustrations are huge and sharp, even in tablets. Text stayed sharp however we zoomed and scrolled. We like the high-quality magazine ads reproduced in Play Magazine's virtual editions, too. With Google's Play Magazine, your favorite reads are just a few taps away.
