Review: Create a basic photo slideshow with 4K Slideshow Maker Portable

Add images and elementary effects to create a custom slideshow in minutes.

It may not have the depth of features that similar programs have, but for ease of use, 4K Slideshow Maker Portable can't be beat. And while the resulting slideshows are not fancy, they look fine.

4K Slideshow Maker Portable comes in a ZIP file, and doesn't require installation. Just click the executable and you're ready to go. The interface is plain but easy to follow, with only a few options found in both the File menu and toolbar to add photos and music and create and preview your slideshow. It doesn't come with any music of its own, but it does let you easily upload your own. And you can pull images from your library or follow an Instagram account to choose pics from their photo stream. Unlike some slideshow makers that have dozens of transitions and other effects you can add, 4K keeps things easy. The settings consist of sliders to set how long each photo displays and the duration of the transitions between images. There are three check box options, including the unexplained Apply Ken Burns effect, Use face detection technology, and one that allows you to set the duration of the slideshow. Unfortunately, the rest of the text was cut off in the small settings window and it couldn't be enlarged to see the rest. Our best guess from our tests is that it was for the length of the music you set for your slideshow. Aside from those slideshow settings, you can choose the slideshow video format, with choices ranging from the default Windows Standard to the iPhone and YouTube. You can set the output folder and name, and that's it. Once you add your images, select your music, and have the few options set, one click of "Make Slideshow" initiates the process. Onscreen text lets you know how long before your slideshow is ready. In our tests, a dozen images took a couple of minutes. The resulting slideshows looked pretty good.

If you don't want to spend all day creating a slideshow masterpiece, 4K Slideshow Maker Portable might be the right option for you. You don't need to be technically inclined, or even artistic, to create slideshows for family reunions, birthdays, or even just for yourself. Just take this free, portable program along, and if you have images, you have a slideshow.
