XetoWare's YouTube Downloader Free's name leaves no doubt about its functionality: It's a freeware YouTube downloader. It can queue and download multiple files at once and save them in several different formats and quality levels. It strikes a balance between stripped-down tools that merely download files and do-it-all apps that sometimes have more options than you need or more steps than you want.
YouTube Downloader Free's compact user interface has all its features and options right on the window. There's no Help file, but the program isn't too hard to figure out. All the same, it could use some clarification when it comes to adding videos since you can't just paste copied URLs or press "Add URL" to paste addresses into the list view. You must copy the URL in YouTube, then paste it into YouTube Downloader Free's Enter Video Link field, and then press "Add URL" to add it to the queue. The program displays the file name and URL in its main data field and a thumbnail preview in a small window. We could choose one of four video formats: MP4, FLV, WEBM, and 3GP, and Video Quality levels. YouTube Downloader Free saves files to its own folder by default, but we could browse to any folder. When we were ready, we pressed "Download Videos." YouTube Downloader Free's download speed depends on your connection and PC, YouTube's traffic, and other factors, but it grabbed and saved our videos in the highest available quality as quickly as any tool of its type we've tried.
YouTube Downloader Free could be a bit more intuitive and flexible, but it does its job well. We prefer more video settings and file options in a YouTube utility, some of which can automatically convert videos to play on specific mobile devices. But YouTube Downloader Free beats the most basic tools hands down.
