Review: Free Commander makes file management easy, but it's not pretty

Manage multiple file folders at once on your PC using this highly-customizable software.

FreeCommander includes way more functions than Windows Explorer, but it doesn't look nearly as good. It's cluttered with confusing buttons and lots of menus that you have to wade through. Once you get the hang of things, though, you'll find it to be a useful tool.

This program turns the traditional file menu into a split-screen file manager. That makes it so much easier to look at multiple folders at once. In addition to that, it's easy to drag files from one folder to another without accidentally making copies or messing things up. Initially, it's not easy to perform even the basic operations. There are more than 30 buttons on the menu bar and many of them link to features you'll only use once or twice if you use them at all. Luckily, you can customize several parts of the menu to make it fit your style. You can change what file folder the program starts with and the size and style of your file icons. FreeCommander even lets you set your own keyboard shortcuts and menu buttons for easier navigation.

Having too many icons and too much information isn't necessarily a bad thing for this program. FreeCommander is one of the most detailed file management tools you'll find for free. That makes it a great download for users who want more information and options that Windows or other freeware won't give them.
