Review: Tetris Blitz is a new, mobile-friendly take on a classic game formula

Swipe and blitz your way to victory in this modern imagining of one of portable gaming's biggest ever titles.

Tetris Blitz is a re-imagining of the classic Tetris formula on a mobile touch screen, speeding up the gameplay and tasking you with getting a high score. The game is the same in concept; but with a number of very clever changes that speed it up significantly and take away the fudging of using a touch screen to maneuver the blocks, there is a much greater degree of control to be had here.

Tetris Blitz basically consists of a prerendered collection of blocks that need to be cleared. The faster you clear, the more points you rack up, and you only get two minutes to rack up as high of a score as you can. While playing, you will tap one of many outlines that appear onscreen where blocks can fall, effectively showing you how and where you can make lines or cascades. This speeds the game up dramatically and opens up new opportunities for higher scores. With other features like cycling, saving blocks for later, and competitive modes, this is a fantastic version of the Tetris gameplay we've known for 30 years in a very mobile-friendly format.

If you enjoy Tetris in any of its many iterations, you will like this game. It's not the same as the classic NES or Gameboy game, but it works well on the iPhone because of the touchscreen-friendly setup. It's almost a new experience and yet so familiar that it's hard to put down.
