Review: iKeyboardRemote automates control of your iPhone or iPad from your Mac

Control music and other features on your iOS device from your desktop.

iKeyboardRemote allows you to pair your computer with an iPad or iPhone over Bluetooth connection, and while it works well, there are some issues that hinder it from being a perfect app. Because of spotty connection issues and the slow startup, it is not an effective app for quick, on the fly connection. But for long-term use at a desk, it can be an effective pairing tool.

The app installs from the App Store, so it is ready to use as soon as you download it. Setup is not explained in the app, but in the App Store listing, so be sure to read it carefully. We missed the directions initially and experienced numerous setbacks in pairing with both an iPad and an iPhone during separate tests. Even after getting the pairings to work properly, there were occasional interruptions. When it worked, however, iKeyboardRemote was a great app, allowing us to change tracks, lock the device, change volume, and go to the home screen from the Mac keyboard. If your iOS device is plugged in across the room or into a speaker system, this is especially handy.

Due to spotty connections, and the fact that Bluetooth can drain the battery on both of your devices (if using a Macbook), iKeyboardRemote is not a perfect solution in every situation. There are other Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectors that work more consistently, although with fewer features. It will depend on your needs, but at least consider iKeyboardRemote because when it works, it works very well.
