Review: TickerType tests your keyboard skills in an addictive game format

Type words as they scroll across the screen, rack up points, then try to beat your score.

As an easy-to-play but addictive game, TickerType for Mac both challenges and refines your typing skills. It doesn't offer flashy graphics or advanced gameplay but if you have a child and wish to advance their typing skills, or your own, this game would be a fun way to do it.

TickerType for Mac downloads as a ZIP file, and no other installation is required after uncompressing it. Words scroll across the window, ticker tape style, and you must type as many as you can. While rather unattractive, the interface is intuitive and easy to use. Prior to playing you can select settings from three options. You can choose small, medium, or large word lengths, set the scroll speed at slow, medium, or fast, and you can choose from a 30-, 60-, or 90-minute round. In total, there are five rounds per game. The point value of each word depends on its length, so the longer the word, the more points it's worth. During testing, we played several rounds and enjoyed trying to beat our own score.

TickerType for Mac manages to add some fun to the somewhat boring task of improving your typing speed. It's not a riveting game, but it accomplishes what it sets out to do.
