Review: Voxer turns your iPhone into a digital walkie-talkie with global support

Talk to friends on any phone with the same app in this unique voice-chat experience.

Voxer marries the technology of the iPhone and instant messaging with a walkie-talkie-style interface to create a unique, secure, and free chat interface. The result is easy and fun to use and the app offers numerous options for sharing information across great distances. It runs in the background of your device to deliver instant notes for real-time communication. It also makes voice communication easier without the need for a phone call, which is a big plus.

After creating your Voxer account, you can add your contact list to see who you know is using the app. Anyone from your list (including your Facebook friends if you log in to Facebook through iOS), will appear here and can be messaged. You can then hold and talk on the bottom of the screen to send a voice message to any of those users. Chats can be done with one or more people and you can send text and images in addition to voice chats. Each voice message can be fairly long (we tested it up to one minute and it worked fine), and it transmits quickly, though often at a lower, speaker-phone grade quality, as you would expect from a walkie-talkie.

Voxer is a fun-to-use app that offers an additional component for instant messaging conversations with your friends. Whether you want to use voice chat more often or would like a more secure alternative to Facebook or other social networks, Voxer is a great tool and worth the download.
