Review: SMPlayer mixes style with robust features and plenty of format support

Play just about any media file on your computer with this sleek download.

SMPlayer gives you all of the playback support of more popular downloads with an extra touch of style. It has a sleek menu that's loaded with features and some really cool playback options. Setup isn't the easiest thing in the world, but the robust download is worth the time you have to put into it.

As you might expect, this is a bigger download that will take a minute or two on slower connections. The app's installation will try to swap your home page and search through Bing if you're not careful, too. Once you've gotten it installed, it has to load some fonts and other goodies, which takes another minute or two. You'll be rewarded for your patience with a program that can play just about any file. All of your music and movies will fit right into SMPlayer's smooth layout. Sadly, the app doesn't support many playlist features other than a "favorite" button, so it's really only useful as a video player. That's fine, because it has all sorts of goodies in terms of playback support. There are caption tools, a screenshot button, and other features that make watching videos really enjoyable. It doesn't hurt that audio and video quality are gorgeous. All of this is tucked inside an intuitive layout with easy-to-use buttons and menus.

After the painful install process, it's a pleasant surprise that this program is so good. It rivals any video-watching download in terms of features and usability. Give it a try if you have a file that other media players can't seem to handle. It's a safe bet that SMPlayer will make quick work of it.
