Review: Avidemux cuts, trims, and edits any video without much hassle

Crop, trim, and edit video clips with this powerful, feature-packed, and open-source video editor.

While it can take some time to understand the layout, once you get going, Avidemux is a powerful, easy-to-use video editor. It's great if you don't want to take a class in video editing just to crop or trim a video. It can also help you make professional looking videos, if you want. Just don't expect those features to come easily.

The program doesn't clearly identify its buttons, which could be a little intimidating for rookie users. However, once you figure out what you're supposed to do, it will only take you a matter of seconds to make the edits you want. Once you're done editing, you can make the file a new format simply by choosing a different output format. Then, all you have to do is type the appropriate file extension. That makes the program easily pull double duty as a basic video converter. If you want more than basic, Avidemux has it. It offers neat filters, decoding options, and custom scripts. However, don't stray too far from the default settings if you don't know what you're doing. You'll get frustrating error messages and the program might even crash on you. That would mean plenty of hard work right down the drain.

Getting a video editor this powerful usually costs a pretty penny. Instead, the only downside to using Avidemux is a somewhat unfriendly menu. That's not a hard tradeoff to manage if you need to edit or convert a video. It gives you a great tool to learn high-performance video editing, as well.
