Review: Accelerate your video conversions with Free CUDA Movie Converter

Convert media files fast on CUDA-capable systems with this freeware.

Free CUDA Movie Converter takes advantage of Nvidia's CUDA parallel processing technology to speed up video conversions in computers with CUDA-capable Nvidia graphics cards. Of course, Free CUDA Movie Converter works in any PC running Windows 2000 to 8, but running it on CUDA-capable machines lets you harness your GPU's extra processing power. We tried it on an ASUS Netbook running Windows 7 HP and equipped with Nvidia's CUDA-capable second-generation Ion graphics processor. This proved a great test platform since the Netbook's extremely limited resources make the GPU's help that much more welcome. Free CUDA Movie Converter handles all kinds of videos, even HD formats, so even the latest and greatest systems with state-of-the-art Nvidia graphics cards will benefit from the extra processing power.

Aside from a large movie clapboard logo labeled CUDA, Free CUDA Movie Converter's user interface closely resembles many similar free media conversion tools we've tried. That's not a bad thing since the ultra-basic main list view, Add button, and wizard-based process proved easy to handle. We started with a basic MPG file and clicked "Next." Free CUDA Movie Converter offered a variety of file types to convert our video into, all grouped by category: Video, with choices such as FLV and AVI; Devices, which let us select our smartphone, media player, or other device and let the program take care of the settings; and Audio, which extracts and converts audio tracks into MP3s, WAVs, and other types, including lossless FLAC files. The program offers options for audio quality, compression level, and other settings, where appropriate. Confused by terms like CUDA? The Help menu includes links to How-Tos and Tutorial Videos.

We converted our test file into several video and audio formats, but one thing was constant: Free CUDA Movie Converter delivered on the promise of speed. Our feeble Netbook powered through conversions almost as fast as our muscle-bound desktop--and noticeably faster than we'd seen with similar tools that lack CUDA's GPU acceleration. If your PC has a CUDA-capable Nvidia graphics card, you owe it to yourself and your system to check out Free CUDA Movie Converter.
