Review: Edit photos and create collages with Photo Editor Fotolr for iPhone and iPad

Edit photos, create collages, and more with this robust photo editing app.

Photo Editor Fotolr is a unique app in many ways because it offers a very robust experience, including a number of editing tools, collage creation, and album curation--all for free. That, however, is tempered by sometimes-spotty performance issues and occasional crashes, combined with a limited and sometimes confusing menu system.

When you open Fotolr you can choose to edit an existing photo from your library or camera, create a collage on one of three templates, or create a new album. There are also sharing tools to send your photos or libraries to other users. The interface works well and the ads are integrated nicely into the background. However, while there are plenty of tools in each menu, crashes frequently occurred during our tests, especially when creating and saving collages. Additionally, it's not always immediately clear what each menu item does and some menu items are either mislabeled or poorly worded, creating some confusion during navigation.

Photo Editor Fotolr is a smartly designed app that is still rough around a few of its corners. Because of its frequent crashes, the frequency with which we were stuck in the interface, and its constant reminders via notification to upgrade, it's hard to recommend it as a total solution for your photo editing needs. However, for smaller edits or experiments with your photos, it is a good place to start because of how much you get for the free price tag.
