Review: Create cards and invites using limited templates with Smilebox for Mac

Create basic templates for photos and develop your own personalized invitations and cards with Smilebox for Mac.

Those who often host events or create scrapbooks may desire ways to create and personalize invitations and photo collages on a computer. Smilebox for Mac functions well and has many features one would expect of a card creation program, but it seems to be aimed at the novice.

The file's small size allowed for a quick download, and the native installer placed the program directly in the applications folder. Startup did require the acceptance of a lengthy user agreement. The program first prompts the user to create a free online account to enable more sharing options, but this can be disabled if desired. Smilebox for Mac's menu is easy to use, which is a good feature since user instructions were not obviously available. The availability of technical support was similarly unknown. The left column of the window allows for easy selection and importing of photos from the user's computer. The main screen area is for selecting the project to be started from a number of templates, each of which has a preview. The user can then change the default text, add photos, and change background music, among other options. Unfortunately, the options are very limited for each of the templates. The program and output did look reasonably well designed, although professionals would be disappointed. However, this application is available for free without any restrictions.

For those users who need a basic card or invitation builder, Smilebox for Mac performs well, but its limited customization options may leave some users dissatisfied.
