4 Pics 1 Word Puzzle Plus 1.0.3 Review

Play more fun picture-and-word games with this free Android app!

"Three of these things belong together; three of these things are kinda the same." Kids who remember the classic "Sesame Street" song and game already know the basic premise of 4 Pics 1 Word Puzzle Plus, a new edition of the popular title from Second Gear Games: Compare and match images to deduce the correct answer. But unlike One Of These Things, this free Android app doesn't show you the answer directly. Your job is to identify the word that all four pictures represent. The pictures appear one by one, and you get extra credit for guessing the answer in as few pictures as possible. You can play in three languages: English, French, and Russian, so it makes for a fun language-learning tool, too. In addition to all-new pictures, 4 Pics 1 Plus adds three new levels and 60 extra words.

When we opened 4 Pics 1 Plus, the app's start page showed a large Play button and a smaller but nevertheless prominent Turn Sound Off control. The latter was much appreciated! Level 1 is the only unlocked level, so we started there. Play is simple: four squares, with one showing a picture; a blank word to be filled in; and a series of letters to choose from. You can skip words or use earned coins to remove extra letters to help you guess. So, in some ways, 4 Pics 1 Plus does give you the answer; just in scrambled form! On our first round, we guessed the first word in three pictures, but we needed four to guess the next one. However, we needed only two pictures for the third game. But even the simple games on Level 1 make you think: is the common factor their size, shape, or color?

We had a hoot with 4 Pics 1 Word Puzzle Plus, which not only recalls "Sesame Street" but also Scrabble and even TV's "Wheel Of Fortune." It's more challenging than the sing-along favorite, but it's just as much fun.
