QMidi for Mac Review

Modify playback of audio and karaoke files using QMidi for Mac.

Finding suitable programs to play certain audio and karaoke files can be difficult. While basically functional, QMidi for Mac's dated interface and lack of instructions could make it a less attractive download for all but the most experienced users.

QMidi for Mac comes with a free trial version with a pop-up nag screen. After the installation completed, the user is prompted to purchase the full version, which costs $12. This menu can be dismissed after waiting a few seconds. The program lacks user instructions, but support for updates is available and additional program versions have fixed reported bugs. The menu, which is not intuitive unless the user is very familiar with complex audio programs, contains dated graphics and very small buttons. When the program is started, a file menu pops up for selection of audio files for playback. A slider indicates the position of the audio file currently playing. Just below are buttons for playback, including play, stop, forward, and back. Additional menus can be opened to control track details and configure the sound returned along with the tempo. When users are working with karaoke files, the size of the lyrics and the screen can be adjusted. Audio playback performed as it would on other, more popular programs.

With its dated menus and lack of instructions, QMidi for Mac would be a viable audio player option for only the most advanced and specialized users.

Editors' note: This is a review of the trial version of QMidi for Mac 2.2.5.
