Manage, tweak, and clean your PC with AnVir Task Manager Free

Manage your PC with this free bundle of powerful system tools.

AnVir Task Manager Free Portable bundles together some powerful system maintenance tools in one portable package controlled by a single interface. It replaces Windows Task Manager, managing your startup menu, scanning for and removing viruses and malware, and even tweaking Windows settings by disabling unneeded processes and regularly cleaning up unnecessary files. Recent updates include improved traffic monitoring.

AnVir Task Manager is a substantial bundle with a 271MB download, which nevertheless would fit easily on nearly every portable storage device in use. Clicking the program's extracted executable file produced a dialog box offering two options, Run As Administrator (recommended) and Run As User. This portable app loads extra files for 64-bit versions of Windows that might briefly delay its launching -- at least ours did. But AnVir Task Manager's busy but efficient interface opened in due course.

Closing the interface offers the options of exiting Task Manager or minimizing it to a useful system tray menu that displays CPU, Memory, or other running processes in a tiny graph in the program's tray icon itself. Its tools offer more details and options than many similar tools. For instance, the Startup tool sorts startup entries by Regular Startup, Registry, User, and Machine, which let us tailor our startup process, including Delayed Processes. Tabs labeled Applications, Processes, Services, and Log let us access and control nearly every aspect of our PC's operation, aided in no small part by a specialized tree view accessing all the program's features as well as the Scheduler, Quarantine, and IE features. More goodies await users who click the Tools menu, including Tweaker for Windows, a process search tool, and an entire submenu labeled System Administrator Stuff. Some of Task Manager's tools do lead to new downloads, but they're strictly optional.

AnVir Task Manager Free Portable does so much that it's not possible to summarize briefly. We were impressed not only with the main features but also the small touches like the customizable tray icon. Some of its capabilities are already available but scattered throughout Windows. AnVir Task Manager Free Portable simplifies things by bringing it all together in one free program.
