Every now and then we get tools we can't really review because they're only for fixing problems our test system (thankfully) doesn't have. Case in point: the dreaded 80070005 family of errors, which can appear when you're trying to install software, update a driver, or do something else that ought to be totally easy but for some reason has become the focus, and thus the bane, of your existence. That's where Security Restore enters the scene. This free tool from Rizonesoft simply attempts to restore your PC's default security settings when something happens to change them, thus screwing up something else in the process. It can remedy a range of installation errors, such as those that can appear when you're installing a new antivirus client. It's also valuable for resetting your system after a virus attack.
Rizonesoft notes that Security Restore should only be run on a system that has something wrong with it. But with typical bad luck, our test system was functioning perfectly. Nevertheless, we extracted the zipped download and opened the rich text file containing Security Restore's documentation. The program is portable freeware that runs without requiring an installer. The program's user interface could hardly be simpler; just a message box explaining what the program does and how long the process takes (about 10 minutes) and buttons labeled Go, About, and Close. A message window displays the program's current activity.
Since the worst thing that could happen by resetting our healthy system's security settings to default would be that we'd have to change some of them back again, we pressed the Go button. Security Restore only took a few minutes. A quick inventory of our security tools and options found no serious issues; the worst thing we found was Custom Settings replaced by more restrictive Windows defaults. So Security Restore seemed to pass the first hurdle by causing no harm. We know it's just a matter of time before another 80070005 error appears. We also know what we'll try on it: Rizonesoft's Security Restore.
