TED offers inspiration on the go

With the official TED app, you can now browse and watch more than 1,000 TED Talks from the organization's popular TED Conferences while on the go.

TED, the esteemed nonprofit organization and popular video-driven Web site, has brought its TED Talks to Android devices. With the official TED app, you can now browse and watch more than 1,000 TED Talks from the organization's popular TED Conferences while on the go.

If you're not familiar with TED, it's a nonprofit organization devoted to "Ideas Worth Spreading." While it may sound a bit hokey, TED produces annual conferences featuring some of the most brilliant speakers from around the world. These speakers often cover topics like technology, entertainment, design, science, and social justice. And after the conferences, each "TED Talk" is made available on the Web via TED.com.

Just like its popular Web site, TED's Android app puts "Featured TED Talks" front and center, and lets you filter by date added or popularity. Alternatively, there's a tab at the top of the app's dashboard that lets you browse through the entire library of TED Talks by Theme, Tags, or Rating. If you've used the TED Web site -- or any other video site on the Web -- then navigating the TED app should feel pretty straightforward and intuitive.

One of the best things about the TED app is the download feature, which lets you store a local copy of a full TED Talk for viewing while offline. Obviously, you can't store TED's entire library locally, so its nice that you can either watch videos through your data connection or download your favorites. The app lets you download both audio and video, in either a high-res or low-res format. To access your downloaded talks, just hit the My Talks tab at the top of the main Dashboard.

What's more, when you tap through to watch a video, each TED Talk page gives you quite a few convenient options. In addition to downloading a talk, you can watch now, or listen to a talk (without video), which is great, if you want to browse the Web or do something else concurrently. You can also bookmark a talk or share it via any of your installed apps that support Android's share function.

Overall, the TED app performs well and offers most of the features that are available through the Web site. The only thing it seems to be missing is the ability to comment on videos. Regardless, if you're a fan of the popular TED Conference or you're simply interested in watching and listening to some inspiring speakers, I highly recommend you give this download a try.
