We've had the dubious honor of reviewing several bug-on-desktop applications, including flies, ants, and roaches. Blech! All of those creepy-crawlies creeped us out, especially when we increased their numbers so that our screens were filled with their shiny bodies and skittering legs. We're pleased to report that Ladybug on Desktop is just as realistic as its insect software brethren, but with the benefit of bugs that are charming instead of chilling.
Once installed, Ladybug on Desktop appears as a ladybug icon in the system tray. The program launches with five ladybugs, and right-clicking the icon lets users add more of them one or five at a time. Users can also specify how many bugs should appear on startup and choose whether or not the bugs are always on top. The ladybugs themselves are quite lifelike, and they come in several different sizes and shades of red and orange. Their movement around the screen is also realistic, with ladybug-like leg motion and occasional pauses. There's no Help file, but that's OK, as everything is pretty self-explanatory. Overall, we think that Ladybug on Desktop is a great choice both for ladybug lovers and for practical jokers; it's cute and funny without the gross-out factor that some of the other insect desktop enhancements possess.
Ladybug on Desktop comes as a ZIP file. It installs and uninstalls without issues.
