Attractive portable address book

Take your contacts with you with this portable freeware.

Efficient Address Book Free Portable is a name that nicely sums up this application, a portable freeware version of an efficient standalone e-mail contacts manager. It's a full-featured address book that you can carry around with you on a USB keychain drive or other portable storage media or device and access from any Windows PC. It can also run at start-up and in multiple instances, too.

We extracted the compressed download and saved it to our portable apps folder. Efficient Address Book Free Portable will run from anywhere in Windows and from pretty much anything Windows can access, too, which is its chief advantage. Once you've opened the program, it stays open as a system tray icon that you can click to maximize, exit, or quickly add new contacts. To be of any value, an address book needs to be able to import and export data, and Efficient Address Book quickly imported contact data we'd saved as Comma Separated Value (CSV) files, the most common form of address book file and one that most clients can handle. The import/export tool also let us set options for what to import and how to import it before we started the process, which saves a lot of time with bulk files. The skinnable main interface resembles similar programs, with the typical left-hand Navigation Panel and tabs labeled Contacts, Searches, and Recycle Bin, though attractive touches like contrasting highlight colors distinguish it from the crowd. We could also change or rearrange the headings in the contacts display, change how names are displayed and ordered, and set other program properties from the Tools menu. Some of the menu entries are labeled Pro and are only available in shareware versions. There are plenty of extras in the freeware version, though, such as automatic backups and a log-on-from-idle option.

Efficient Address Book Free Portable is an attractive, competent performer as a portable or desktop contacts manager. It's customizable, and it offers a Pro upgrade, for a price, if you need still more features. For most users, the free portable version will be an excellent choice.
