Beyond Ynth is an innovative and idiosyncratic puzzle-platformer game, a fun follow-up to Ynth, and now also available in striking HD on the iPad.
You play as a fragile little bug named Kribl, who traverses a series of worlds of various types (forest, desert, volcano, and snow), scurrying through mazelike boxes. You push and rotate these boxes to create a safe, interconnected pathway from one end of the level to the other, and along the way (depending on the type of world you're in), you have to watch out for deadly sunbeams, freezing air, falling acorns, and the like. The four-button controls are simple: left, right, jump left, and jump right. In addition to just surviving from one end of a level to the other, you can also try to collect one or two blue diamonds along the way--although these are often tucked away in deviously hard-to-reach spots.
With the game's branching map, you usually have a few levels to choose from, but it doesn't take long to run into tricky obstacles that require a lot of forethought to overcome--and even if you successfully complete a level, going back for the blue diamonds can provide some great replay value. A new "rewind" button can help you backtrack and regroup if you make a misstep.
Beyond Ynth is a well-designed and extremely satisfying puzzler--especially for more hard-core puzzle fans--with charming audio and art direction to boot. Definitely worth a download.
