Duplicate images can take up a lot of space on your hard drive, but it's not always easy to locate, compare, and delete the duplicates. DupeGuru Picture Edition is a search utility that's made especially for this purpose. It didn't work exactly as we expected it to, but in the end it seemed to be pretty effective.
The program's interface is plain and not particularly intuitive. We decided to test the program by intentionally creating some duplicate images in a particular folder, and once we figured out how to select the proper directory, we had DupeGuru scan it. It didn't turn up any results, which we thought was odd. We adjusted the filter hardness so that it would return more results, scanned again, and still didn't get any hits. We then decided to scan our entire hard drive for duplicates to see if the program worked at all. We had much more luck with this, and we liked the way that DupeGuru displayed the results; duplicates were grouped together, with a reference file shown in blue and potential duplicates indented and listed below. Selecting a duplicate file and clicking the Details button displayed a dialog with a side-by-side comparison of the two images, both visually and with their various attributes listed. Dealing with confirmed duplicates was as easy as checking the boxes next to them and choosing to delete, move, copy, or ignore them, or choose from several other actions. The program's HTML Help file could be more thorough, but it provides enough basic guidance. We're still not sure why DupeGuru couldn't handle searching a single folder but did manage to search our entire hard drive, but in the end it seemed to work pretty well.
DupeGuru Picture Edition installs and uninstalls without issues. We recommend this program to all users.
