Super Mega Worm Lite is a free, five-level preview of Super Mega Worm, a retro-looking arcade game in which you control a giant bloodthirsty worm that's out to wreak some (cartoonishly) gory eco-vengeance.
Thanks to the addition of new directional-pad controls and the option to continue your game, Super Mega Worm has gotten much better (and easier) in recent updates--although the game also has a Hard difficulty setting (in addition to Normal) and the original tilt and touch slider controls for more hardcore gamers. You control your mega worm ("Wojira," in classic mega-monster-movie style), navigating back and forth across a horizontally scrolling landscape, burrowing into the earth (pushing a touch-screen "GAS" button to pick up speed) and then emerging to feast on eco-unfriendly humanity. Your game ends when your ever-shrinking energy bar is depleted, so you have to keep eating to recharge and survive--ideally humans (who run from you screaming, occasionally with comic speech balloons like "Please, I am a nice guy"), but you can also snack on wandering cows, ostriches, and the like, or overturn a truck or police car. If you can get up enough speed--or if you can bounce off a vehicle--you can even get Wojira airborne, and you pick up bonuses for eating multiple targets in quick succession.
Super Mega Worm Lite is definitely bloody, but in a clearly comic, over-the-top, and low-res way, and it manages to deliver on its bizarre premise while also serving up some seriously fun gameplay. Not surprisingly, the full version has even more action, as Wojira "evolves," growing longer, gaining new abilities (such as the ability to spit acid), and facing a growing cast of enemies on and above the ground.
