Flipn' Monsters is a clever, comical take on traditional card-matching games like Memory, and it's easy enough for kids but with an arcade mode that's addictive even for older gamers.
The object of the game's classic mode is simple: You flip cards over one at a time with a single tap, matching identical pairs on a three-by-six grid. A timer clocks your speed and records your best time. The cards feature nine different colorful monsters, which are distinct enough to be memorable but similar enough to provide a challenge. The game's arcade mode is much more fun: You're still matching identical pairs, but the game starts with just two types of monsters and then adds another type with each successive level (up to all nine). You're given a quick peek at all the cards before each level starts, but the layout can be hard to remember since cards drop down to replace the ones you've removed. You can earn bonus "Monster Flips," which let you shake your device to briefly reveal all the cards again, and you earn more points when you're on a "streak." The game ends when you run out of time on a level.
Flipn' Monsters has a lot of personality for such a fast-paced, straightforward game, with an endearing cast of creatures and a looping soundtrack right out of a Tim Burton movie. The game could be even better (leaderboards are a must, and more options for classic mode couldn't hurt either, such as variable grid size or a counter for incorrect guesses), but Flipn' Monsters is pretty flipn' fun as is.
