Time and project manager

Manage your projects more efficiently with this time-tracking tool.

Advanced Time Reports is a project management tool combined with time-tracking and reporting features in a single, multiuser solution optimized for managing small teams across departmental lines. It has the expected scheduling, reporting, client and contacts, and time sheet functions critical to project and team management. Xpress offers two desktop and two Web-based editions of ATR; the Premier Edition for Windows PCs offers all the functionality of the Professional Edition, with the addition of expense tracking and more team and project management options, but it lacks a few of the Web Premier version's features, such as mileage tracking and SQL Server.

Software, especially business software, tends to look alike these days, but ATR Premier's series of attractive, efficient interfaces show that good design and functionality can coexist, even in a button-down environment. ATR Premier's basic Windows-style layout makes subtle but effective use of color, fonts, and icons to present a lot of information quickly without looking like either a DMV form or a skinned music player. The toolbar changes to specific, highlighted functions when you click any of the tabbed items on the file menu, an intriguing and efficient solution we'd like to see more of. When you first open ATR Premier, you're prompted by a wizard to set up client and billing information. There are three main displays, Timesheets, To Do, and Expenses, with spreadsheet-like features that we found surprisingly familiar. Thoughtful touches like an integrated calendar on the Timesheets tab and a calculator on the Expenses tab hint at real-world experience in designing this program.

Some project management tools are built around "theories" designed to guide your project decisions, but ATR Premier leaves the strategic thinking to you; its primary mission is to help you increase your billables by improving your capability to coordinate your projects, clients, and time, including your team's efforts. At that, it's a success.

Editors' note: This is a review of the full version of Advanced Time Reports Premier 9.3.0. The trial version is limited to 30 days.
