Goaaal! is a soccer shootout arcade game, in which you try to rack up the best score possible by taking successive shots on goal.
The interface is simultaneously simple and tricky: you have a fixed view, facing the goal (and the goalie), and you just flick your finger to kick the ball. The trickiness comes from mastering accuracy (requiring much trial and error), learning how to fire on the ground versus in the air, and figuring out how to put spin on the ball by flicking from one side or the other. You can also reposition the ball by holding it for a second, then dragging it.
You have plenty of chances to practice in the game's Arcade and Progressive modes. In the faster Arcade mode you have 10 shots to score the most points possible, with rewards for shot power and chains of accurate kicks. You can earn badges such as "Hat Trick," "Shutout," "Eat Dirt" (for making the goalie dive and miss), and "Full House"--and when the game says, "You're on fire!" the ball literally starts burning. Progressive mode is the same except that you can aim at a target inside the goal, and you get a free ball whenever you hit it--so experienced players can rack up big scores with many shots beyond the starting total of 10 balls.
Goaaal! is a little thin as a game (it doesn't help that both your shots and the goalie AI's performance can be unexpectedly terrible), but it's good pick-up-and-play fun when you're competing for high scores with friends or on the leaderboards. The graphics are sharp and stable, even on older devices, and the developers have added nice touches like convincing audio and two different music tracks. Worth a free or cheap download if soccer shootouts are your thing.
