Commodore 64 is an app that emulates the iconic '80s home computer of the same name, giving you access to some free games as well as an in-game store to buy more.
The interface looks lovely, with a nostalgia-inducing splash screen and a slick, faux-wooden shelf for your games. The app comes preloaded with several titles (although even if you owned a C64, you might not have heard of them), and by choosing the "Shop" tab, you can browse through more than 30 other games, including quite a few free ones. Each game has screenshots and a short description, and you can play them with a virtual joystick in either portrait or wider landscape mode. Portrait mode has a stationary joystick and button at the base of your screen (rendered with lots of retro detail), but landscape mode devotes much more screen space to your games, with a translucent, movable virtual joystick and button on either side of the screen (a clever idea, but one that works much better in practice on some games than others).
We downloaded this app for free, which seems like a fair price given that you have to pay for the better games--and the free titles (and even some of the paid ones) are fairly primitive, obscure, or both (and some of the games are nearly impenetrable if you're not already familiar with them). Unfortunately, Apple forced the removal of Commodore BASIC from earlier versions of this app, which provided a more rounded C64 experience, but this is still a fun download for former C64 owners and fans of truly retro games.
