Web site searcher

Find any file on the biggest Web site with this capable crawler.

Finding just the right line of text or code in a Web site can be frustrating, especially if the site is large or has many links and pages. Browser-style search tools and basic editors often aren't up to the job, particularly if you're looking for more than one type of file. Inspyder Finder is a Web crawler utility that can search for specific content anywhere on a Web site. It can search CSS and JavaScript files as well as HTML content.

This interesting tool is basically a Web crawler with sophisticated search capabilities, though you might think of it as a search engine optimized for Web files. It has a colorful, efficient dialog for an interface, with icon-based navigation, check boxes for search options, and a tabbed display window. The Help file also offers links to Web-based documentation, including an FAQ file and a user's manual in PDF format. The program is easy to use: simply enter your root URL, your search terms, and your options, and Inspyder Finder quickly finds and displays results with both address and text excerpts. We especially like the ability to securely edit protected pages as well as exclusion lists.

Inspyder Finder's free trial version is limited to 10-page crawls; the full version costs $29.95. It works in Windows versions up to Vista; we tried it Windows 7 but an issue with Microsoft's .NET Framework prevented a proper installation. Nevertheless, it's a handy tool that can make Web site maintenance easier, and it's worth a look.
