Video to go

Download YouTube videos from within Chrome with this clever extension.

Every now and then you stumble across something really great on YouTube that you want to save to your computer for later viewing. There are a plethora of programs that do this, but GetYouTube is an extension for Chrome that lets you save YouTube videos using nothing but your browser.

GetYouTube integrates well with Chrome--a little too well. Unlike many extensions, it didn't place an icon to the right of the address bar. There was no trace of it at all. The publisher's description tells users to select a format from a dropdown list and click a button. What dropdown list? What button? There was nothing within the extension to direct us: no options or Help file. Finally, we noticed a new button on the YouTube page itself. Beneath the area of the page that displays the video's URL and code for embedding, GetYouTube appears with the promised button and dropdown menu. Users simply select the format they want--among them are MP4, FLV, and 3GP--enter the desired file name into a text box, and click the button. GetYouTube downloads the file and saves it in the selected format. Once we figured out how the extension works, we found it to be one of the easiest ways to download YouTube videos that we've come across. It really doesn't get much simpler than integrating the download utility right into the YouTube page.

GetYouTube is free. It installs and uninstalls without issues. We recommend this program to all users.
