Gone are the days when this excellent music discovery app was a free experiment. Yet Midomi's philosophy and core functionality remains unchanged. Like Shazam, Midomi returns song titles and artist information when you sing, hum, speak, type, or play a request into a stylish, redesigned interface. The four input types give you the freedom to dictate your search style (you'll never catch us crooning). While the input quality may vary depending on ambient noise, our tests were fairly accurate, and typing usually prevailed in the rare case that singing or holding the iPhone up to a speaker failed.
Take heed that Midomi is the discovery app advertised and not a song downloader. Like other native iPhone apps, this one will steer you toward legitimate purchasing through iTunes. Indeed, the musically curious are offered the chance to buy the single in addition to sharing the song details with friends, and watching YouTube videos.
We do harbor one complaint that bypassed our ears and directly assaulted our eyes. Although this is a premium application, it flashes ads in a banner on the results page. This is behavior we expect in freeware, not in an app that costs more than the price of a latte.
