Bump is a free and fairly ingenious app that makes exchanging contact information (and now photos, too) as easy as sharing a fist-bump with a fellow iPhone or iPod Touch user. Bump's streamlined interface is simple: you just open Bump and indicate whether you'd like to share a photo (any image on your device) or your contact information (whether your entire contact card, or any combination of your phone number, e-mail, photo, and address). You then "bump" hands together with another Bump user, and the app uses your device's location information and accelerometer to match up nearby Bump-enabled devices in midbump. A few seconds later, you and the other user see confirmation screens, and you tap a button to confirm that you want to share information (which Bump does securely, with encryption via HTTPS).
Bump's main drawback is that you need other Bump users for the app to be useful--and currently Bump is only available for the iPhone and iPod Touch, although there are plans to offer it on more devices. Given that the app is free, though, and that it does what it does so well, we can only hope that the number of Bump users keeps growing. In the meantime, Bump is an excellent free tool for quickly swapping photos and other images between co-workers and friends.
