IconLover is an easy-to-use design tool for icons and cursors. The program is basic enough for beginners, but it offers more experienced users plenty of options as well.
The interface will look familiar to anyone who's ever used Microsoft Paint. All of the program's functions are well-organized with buttons and menus. Because so many of the functions are similar to those of Paint, it's easy for anyone to get started. We found that the program was very easy to use for basic functions, but that the more advanced features were something of a mystery. The built-in Help file seems geared toward more experienced users. For example, there is a section on creating animated cursors, but the Help file only describes very specific steps--how to insert an empty frame, for example--rather than giving users an overview of how to create an animated cursor. This won't be a problem for more experienced users, but beginners shouldn't jump into IconLover thinking that they're going to start creating animated icons or other fancy effects right away. Although the interface is well organized, it is not designed to walk novices through each step of every process. We did enjoy how easy it was to create an icon out of an existing image, as well as the cursor preview feature that lets users test a new cursor with buttons, check boxes, and other typical tasks.
IconLover has a 30-day trial period. It installs icons without asking, but it uninstalls cleanly. We recommend this program to anyone looking for a quick and simple way to make icons and cursors.
